Three arrested for defaming V.S. Achuthanandan on social media

The Museum police on Thursday arrested two people for allegedly maligning Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission chairman V.S. Achuthanandan and Kerala Youth Commission Chairperson Chintha Jerome on a social networking platform.

The accused were identified as Vijeesh and Nithin of Payyanakkal in Kozhikode. They were apprehended from Kozhikode in connection with the case registered two months ago.

The accused had allegedly taken an image of Mr. Achuthanandan and Ms. Jerome that appeared on the cover page of a publication and morphed it to troll them in a defamatory and obscene manner.

According to the police, the whereabouts of the duo, who are suspected to be Sangh Parivar supporters, were traced using their IP (internet protocol) address. They were booked under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act and were let off on bail.

Man held

In another case, the Fort police arrested one man for allegedly defaming a senior police officer on social media and attempting to promote enmity among people of different faiths.

The accused was identified as Bobby Lal of Chellamangalam at Sreekaryam. He was nabbed for posting in a WhatsApp group a message that portrayed Deputy Inspector General of Police (Armed Police Battalion) K. Shefeen Ahamed in a bad light and attempted to link the officer with the controversy surrounding Sabarimala. The action was taken on the basis of a complaint filed by a member of the group. The accused was charged under Section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Kerala Police Act.
