NEPAL: What we are currently watching on TV is only the tip of the iceberg. The quake and its devastation is not limited to Kathmandu, Nepal is much more, its only that the rescue forces and media have not yet fanned out to the rest of the country. Remember Latur in interior Maharashtra? 100,000 or so perished there, even though there were no high rises in the area, just one or 2 storey homes. Am fearing the numbers will be much larger than the 1800 dead already announced.
The country will take years to recover. India must go all out to help and rebuild. For years we have had Nepali men and women working as watchmen, maids etc in India for a pittance. It’s payback time.
Earth is prone to massive earthquakes time to time. Some regions are more prone, some less. It’s a relic from the period of the formation of our planet. It’s not one solid body, but made up of what are called “tectonic plates” deep below its surface.
To the average person, it’s thought to be an act of God, but in reality it’s the science and history of the way our EARTH was formed.
It’s just surprising that we spend Billions on space exploration but not enough on how to accurately predict earthquakes.
